History

YPERIA – One of the ancient names of Amorgos.

Established on January 25, 1993, the goal and purpose of the Association is to promote and upgrate the women’s position in the society, the spread of Culture and Tradition, to cultivate environmental sensitivity and willingness to solve any kind of problems of the community.

The inspiration to organize the first Yperia in 2003, arose when some members of the Cultural Women Association of Tholaria – Amorgos participating to a tourist exhibition in Scandinavia realized that there was no good information for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.

The Board of the Cultural Association Tholaria under the presidency of Mrs. Irene Giannakopoulos, thought then to invite journalists from all around the world as well as one of the member of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games 2004. In that way information would be valid and promoted in the international press & media.

It was also decided, that this international meeting would be an opportunity to honor the French producer Luc Besson, who, with his successful film “The Big Blue” ,that was partly filmed in Amorgos, made the island known worldwide, generating of great benefit.

After the success of this first meeting it was decided to establish an annual event to gather the international press and media to promote Amorgos, establish contacts and exchange ideas, about the development of alternative sustainable tourism.
