The 7th International Short Tourism Film Festival of Amorgos will take place from October 13th to October 16th 2016 and includes a special tribute to the challenge of tourism for social economy, exploring the opportunities but also the dangers of touristic development for the economy, particularly of small communities.
This tribute is implemented through the Operational Program “Human Resouces Development, Education and Lifelong Learning” and is co-financed by the European Union (European Social Fund) and Greek national funds.
Through the tribute “The challenge of tourism for social economy”, the Festival aims to approach the issue of the ongoing crisis in Greece. Although the crisis is basically one of financial nature, it has acquired serious social dimensions, increasing the possibility of long lasting effects.
This special tribute explores the possibilities of a special category of the economy, tourism, and how these can be used to the advantage mainly of local communities in the long term.
The basic axis of the Aegean region economy is tourism, which is presented in various forms and financial data on the different islands of the archipelago. Consequently, it is possible to observe the benefits of touristic development as well as the pressure and challenges that it presents on the natural systems, but also on the local communities.
Amorgos, a Cycladic island in transition from being a remote land to an important destination of mainly alternative tourism, hosts the International Convention on Tourism and Culture YPERIA and the International Short Tourism Film Festival with the aim of raising awareness towards the above issues.
The special tribute “The challenge of tourism for social economy” includes six films that focus on different approaches of social economy and the suggestions of social groups towards sustainable touristic development. The screening of these films is expected to intrigue but also inspire the audience, who in turn is expected to consider, suggest and act on similar levels, based on the principles of sustainable economic development and social cohesion.
The films of the tribute mainly refer to remote areas and islands, a fact of particular interest as it is precisely these areas that are mostly affected in financial, social and cultural terms.
